NATIONAL SEX OFFENDER PUBLIC REGISTRY SITE

Do you know how many registered sex offenders are living in your neighborhood?

As of July 20, 2005, the United States Department of Justice has established a new Website that the public can use to educate themselves about the possible presence of such offenders in their local communities.

Using the new Website, interested members of the public have access to and may search participating state Website public information regarding the presence or location of offenders, who, in most cases, have been convicted of sexually violent offenses against adults and children and certain sexual contact and other crimes against victims who are minors.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez. says, "Families need to have information to fully protect their children."

Tracy Henke, Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Justice Programs said, "Real-time access to public registry information can offer parents, grandparents, and concerned citizens the ability to protect children by identifying sex offenders nationwide through a single search from their home computer, or even a local library with Internet access."   

THE INFORMATION PROVIDED ON THE NEW DOJ SITE IS INTENDED FOR COMMUNITY SAFETY PURPOSES ONLY AND SHOULD NOT BE USED TO THREATEN, INTIMIDATE, OR HARASS. MISUSE OF THIS INFORMATION MAY RESULT IN CRIMINAL PROSECUTION.
