Suspect Allegedly Met Girl Through Internet Chat Rooms
March 15, 2005
ONEONTA, Ala. - The FBI has released more information about the abduction of a 14-year-old Blount County girl and the arrest of her alleged kidnapper.
The case led authorities to issue an Amber Alert early Tuesday morning.
According to Carmen Adams, special agent in charge, the victim -- Amber Danielle Shelton -- was found unharmed in Midland City, near Dothan, early Tuesday.
Adams said the girl was first reported missing from her home in Oneonta on Saturday morning. However, the Amber Alert was not issued until Tuesday morning because Shelton was initially classified as a runaway.
Charged in the teenager's kidnapping was 32-year-old Michael John Humphrey, also of Midland City. Adams said Humphrey and the girl became acquainted through Internet chat rooms.
Authorities said Humphrey, who is in the Dale County Jail, faces a host of state charges including kidnapping and solicitation of a minor.
Adams said the girl will be reunited with her family in Oneonta as soon as possible.
