It’s been a long time coming for Dana Smith of Bryant but this weekend
she will be reunited with her five year old son after more than a three
year separation.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department has been searching for a child
since 2001. According to Chief Investigator Chuck Phillips Dana Shanta
Smith was awarded custody of her 18-month old son, Cameron Justice, in
October, 2001. Shortly thereafter her ex husband, Jerry Gene Smith,
vanished with the toddler.

“Felony warrants were issued for Jerry Gene Smith in March, 2002,”
Phillips said. The search continued until last week when the elder Smith
was found in Texas and arrested by Harris County authorities.

Within just a few hours after the arrest, Cameron Justin was found. He
was taken to Child Protective Services in the Galveston/ Houston area.

Cameron has been featured on the National Center for Missing and
Exploited Children web site. It is that organization that will fly his
mother, Dana to Texas for the reunion of the mother and child.

Phillips said Captain Tommy Holt will be traveling to Texas as well. Holt
recently received information that Smith could be in that area. The tip
panned out.

Holt will return with Smith who will be extradited.
