Young Girl Safe After Attempted Kidnapping — Attacked With Pepper Spray, Runs To Safety

Mar. 18 (BCN) — A 12-year-old girl has been pepper sprayed and grabbed by
a man in San Jose while walking along a busy street, according to police
Officer Gina Tepoorten.

The incident occurred around 3:13 p.m. Thursday as the girl was walking
from school to her grandmother’s house on Meridian Avenue between Kooser
Road and Dentwood Drive.

Tepoorten said the man was standing near a vehicle when he called out to
the girl, asking for her help in removing a cat from beneath the car.

The girl agreed but was pepper sprayed in the eyes before the man grabbed
her.

She was able to break away from his grasp and run to a nearby home where
she called authorities.

“She was definitely sprayed with a chemical and obviously very shaken
up,” Tepoorten said. “It was such a brazen act in broad daylight.”

The suspect is described as a Hispanic man possibly in his 40s wearing a
gray baseball hat.

Investigators do not believe the vehicle the man was standing by is
associated with the suspect, according to Tepoorten.
