Witnesses Prove the Amber Alert System Works

Oct. 7, 2004

There was really nowhere Timothy Martinez could run.

After police activated an Amber Alert last night, it was only a matter of
time before someone spotted him.

Alex Cabrero spoke with 2-people, this afternoon…who saw his car,
called police…and, helped them track his whereabouts.

Alex?

This Amber Alert was only in place for less than two hours before
Martinez was arrested.

Two Salt Lake Valley residents just happened to be in the right place at
the right time.

Steve Garrett has an interesting name for his carpet cleaning
business…Most Wanted.

He just never thought he’d actually follow one.

STEVE GARRETT: “MY FIRST REACTION WAS SHOCK, AND I HAD TO THINK ABOUT IT
A FEW SECONDS.”

Garrett was driving home, when he noticed several highway signs
indicating an Amber Alert.

So he turned on his radio…and found out police were looking for Timothy
Martinez…who had abducted and allegedly threatened his own 3-year-old
son, and was driving a blue Honda Civic.

STEVE GARRETT: “THAT’S WHEN I SPOTTED THE CAR IN QUESTION.”

This woman was in the same area, and saw the car too.

TONIA: “I SAID GUYS, LOOK AT THE CAR IN FRONT OF US, AND THEY’RE GOING NO
WAY MOM, NO WAY.”

Yes way, and she and Garrett…without knowing each other…called police
and followed the car into this gas station off Bangerter Highway near
134th South.

TONIA: “HE WAS VERY CALM, AND HE JUST KIND OF SAT THERE, DIDN’T MOVE,
DIDN’T DO ANYTHING.”

ALEX CABRERO: “MARTINEZ WAS ONLY AT THIS GAS STATION FOR A FEW MINUTES.
WHEN HE LEFT, TONIA TRIED FOLLOWING HIM… BUT BECAUSE OF ALL THE
CONSTRUCTION ON THE ROADS… SHE LOST HIM.”

TONIA “I KEPT REPEATING THE LICENSE PLATE NUMBER OVER AND OVER IN MY
HEAD.”

It turns out Martinez was on his way home where a detective was already
waiting.

Still, police say the Amber Alert was a success, and Tonia and Garrett
helped them track Martinez’s movements.

STEVE GARRETT: “I THINK THAT’S JUST CREDIT AND SHOWS HOW GOOD THE SYSTEM
WORKS.”

Martinez’s mother spoke to us, and said her son would never harm his
child.

But police say they had information Martinez was threatening to kill
himself, and his son.

That’s why the Amber Alert was activated.
